This method of religious formation was started by two women working with children more than 60 years ago in Rome. Today the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is in 37 countries around the world.
There are many things that make this method unique. Children work in a beautiful environment called an atrium. It is filled with hands-on works they can choose in the areas of The Mass, Baptism, The Good Shepherd, geography of the land of Israel, Biblical stories of the birth of Christ, and Parables of the Kingdom.
The focus of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is to allow a space and way for the child to nurture his/her relationship with God. The children are invited to use the space in the room, called an atrium, to listen to God. The catechist working with the child is trained to present the works to the child with respect, listening together to the Word of God, and allowing the child the freedom to respond to it.
At St. Pius, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is offered on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30-6pm for children ages 3-12. We do require young children to be potty trained before they register.
